The Spectator

The Spectator was a daily paper started by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele. It began on 1 March 1711 and ran to 555 daily issues. Addison and Steele used various personae, including the famous Mr. Spectator, to discuss culture, literature, politics, and daily life in witty, entertaining, and informative essays. Addison estimated that each issue reached 60,000 readers.
