Austen’s Letters

Jane Austen wrote informative and lively letters to family and friends. In 2017 JournalLists will be serialising selections from her correspondence, beginning with the letters she wrote to her sister, Cassandra Austen, in May and June 1799.

These four engaging letters were sent from Bath, and contain intriguing allusions to Pride and Prejudice (then called First Impressions), which was already circulating among the family in proofs, years before publication. We also learn about Jane’s arrival in Bath, and news of the various health-giving treatments available in the spa town. Austen’s engaging and open style in these letters is an excellent introduction to her correspondence.

Austen’s letters to Cassandra begin on 17 May 2017.
